TMJ & Jaw Pain

Can Clear Aligners Help TMJ?

Patients often ask whether clear aligners can fix their jaw pain. The honest answer: sometimes, but order of operations matters. Here’s when aligners help, and when stabilizing the joint should come first.

Can Clear Aligners Help TMJ?, Root Cause Dental Group, London Ontario

How alignment relates to the jaw joint

Your bite, how your upper and lower teeth meet, directly affects how your jaw joints rest and move. When teeth are crowded or misaligned, the jaw can be forced into a strained position, contributing to muscle fatigue and joint stress.

In those cases, orthodontic treatment that improves the bite can genuinely support a healthier jaw position. So yes, aligners can sometimes help TMJ symptoms.

Why stabilization often has to come first

Here’s the catch: if your joint is currently inflamed or sitting in an unstable position, moving teeth on top of that instability can lock in a bad relationship, or make symptoms worse.

That’s why we often stabilize the joint first, using an orthotic appliance to find a comfortable, repeatable jaw position. Once the joint is calm and stable, we can plan tooth movement around that healthy position rather than guessing.

The role of diagnosis

No two TMJ cases are the same. Some patients are excellent candidates for aligners right away; others need a phase of joint stabilization first; a few have issues that alignment alone won’t solve.

A thorough diagnosis, looking at your joints, muscles, bite, and airway together, is the only way to know which path is right for you. Skipping that step is the most common reason aligner treatment disappoints TMJ patients.

Frequently asked questions

Can clear aligners make TMJ worse?

They can, if treatment moves teeth while the joint is unstable or inflamed. That’s why we assess and, when needed, stabilize the joint before planning alignment.

Do you offer clear aligners?

Yes, we are a certified Angel Aligner provider and plan aligner treatment around a healthy, stable jaw position.

How do I know if I’m a candidate?

A consultation and diagnostic records appointment will tell us whether aligners can begin now or whether stabilization should come first.
