Airway Orthodontics

Early Orthodontics: A Simple Guide

Supporting a child’s growth early can change how they breathe, sleep, and function for years to come. This simple guide explains what early (airway) orthodontics is and why timing matters so much.

What early orthodontics really means

Early orthodontics, sometimes called interceptive or airway orthodontics, isn’t about putting braces on young children to straighten teeth. It’s about guiding how the jaws and airway develop during the years when growth is happening fastest.

By creating room for the tongue, teeth, and airway as a child grows, we can often prevent problems that would otherwise require more complex treatment later.

Why timing matters

A child’s jaws are still growing and highly responsive to guidance, an opportunity that narrows as they mature. Intervening at the right age lets us work with nature instead of against it.

Wait too long, and growth that could have been gently guided may instead need to be corrected with more involved treatment, including extractions or surgery in some cases.

Signs early care may help

  • Snoring or mouth breathing
  • Crowded or crooked baby/adult teeth
  • A narrow palate or high, arched roof of the mouth
  • Restless sleep, bedwetting, or daytime fatigue
  • Frequent cavities despite good hygiene
  • Speech issues or a forward tongue posture

Frequently asked questions

What age should my child be seen?

Around age 7 is a common time for a first assessment, but earlier evaluation is worthwhile if you notice snoring, mouth breathing, or crowding. Pre-Phase 1 care can begin as early as ages 3-5.

Isn’t it better to wait for all adult teeth?

For straightening alone, sometimes. But for guiding growth and the airway, the most valuable window is while the child is still developing.

Will my child still need braces later?

Early care often reduces the complexity of any later treatment, and sometimes avoids it entirely.
